Remembering the Reformation

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of 31 October 1517,  the date when Martin Luther nailed the Ninety-five Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. That date marks the launching of what later became known as the Protestant Reformation. Here at PLC we want to reflect on this anniversary, to commemorate it and give thanks to God’s work through it.
One summary of this great event is what became the “Five Solas” of the Protestant Reformation. The Five Solas are five Latin phrases (or slogans) summarizing the Reformer’s basic theological principles. “Sola” is Latin meaning “alone “ or “only” and the corresponding phrases are:
Sola Fide—by faith alone.
Sola Scriptura—by Scripture alone.
Solo Christo—through Christ alone.
Sola Gratia—by grace alone.
Soli Deo Gloria—glory to God alone.
Starting Sunday, September 25, we’ll begin celebrating the Reformation and as we do we’ll remember the crucial and simple center “In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself…For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:18-21). This message is the gospel the world needs. It’s also the message PLC needs and every Christian heart as well.
Let’s celebrate!
